Gum Crime - Statistics
Local authorities spend 150 million a year removing chewing gum from our pavements at a cost to the tax payer. Chewing gum is now classified as permanent litter until painstakingly removed by specialist companies.
The removal of chewing gum deposit is proving to be a bottomless financial pit for local authorities. Every year, the UK alone spend more than £150 Million to remove encrusted gum from our streets of Britain while the annual cleaning budget for London is over £5 million alone.
More than 374 Billion pieces of gum are produced every year that represents 3 million tonnes consumed worldwide. As every piece of discarded gum takes two minutes to remove and five years to decompose, the chewing gum has become a problem for local authorities. Even if it may well be a tasty treat, it is a particularly worldwide “sticky” problem when it comes to keeping public areas clean.
United Emirates TFL – O2 Arena - Greenwich Peninsular
During the summer of 2012 TFL and United Emirates grand Sky Rail project was nearing completion. This impressive looking soon to become iconic landmark structure was created to deliver a 21st century transportation service to commuters visiting the O2 arena and the Greenwich Peninsula.
The highly entertaining journey some 200 feet in the air over the Thames was expected to be immensely popular and has since been proven to be so.
With thousands of commuters now using the Sky rail to travel over the Thames the North and South Terminals are now extremely busy with enormous foot flow.
To prepare for this expectation we were approached by Quintain the O2 arena management and Mace the principal contractor to discuss a post construction clean and a protective surface impregnation to the internal and external paved areas at the North and South Terminal.
Given the short lead time and the scheduled date for the Mayor of London Boris Johnson to officially launch the project to the public we had a little over 24 hours to complete.
With many contractors on site finalising a multitude of tasks this was going to be in need of some reasonable measure of patience and determination.
With a deployment of three units, six experienced operatives, some very long hours in to the following morning and a degree of co-operation from some anxious contractors we completed on time and budget to two relieved and highly satisfied clients.
For the Mayor`s maiden voyage on the Sky Rail, we missed the crowning moment, some much needed sleep was in order.
